The main areas of focus for this project were rotoscoping, an effective use of form and counterform, and 2.5D design. Although these are the focal points of this project, I also have to focus on many other aspects of design for the final outcome.
Thematically, the project attempts to merge visual minimalism with the aesthetics of “Euphoria”, both in colour scheme as well as pacing and mood. Although this isn’t a film, I will still include a lot of visual symbolism within each scene for each of the characters portrayed in the show, as a way to better represent their multifaceted personalities while maintaining a visually minimalistic style.
I am using the intro to the 2006 film “Casino Royale” as visual inspiration, as the rotoscoping and minimalistic elements of design are very similar to what I want to achieve.
I began the project with a solid round of visual research, putting together different moodboards, creating preliminary sketches of scenes/frames I wanted to create and plenty of notes on specific elements I needed to include.
I took quite some time developing my storyboard and figuring out important scenes and/or visually pleasing transitions I could use in this project, with a heavy focus on capturing the shows visual language and tone; which has saved me a lot of time, whereas in previous projects I have been less efficient due to trying to think of things on the fly, this method has provided me with a clear path to the finish line.
Creating a proof of concept also really helped me gain an idea of how much time the chosen style and techniques would consume, which allowed me to pivot into a more efficient process.
Originally, I planned on involving a lot more rotoscoping, however, due to time constraints, that is not a feasible process, so I am involving a lot more 2.5D animation than I had foreseen, however, I am finding a lot more creative freedom in this process relative to rotoscoping. The added flexibility of this technique allows me more time and energy to be spent on the other elements of the design process, leading me to more polished, stronger compositions and transitions.
